Shopify Sale Price Tutorial — Add Compare-At & Strike-Through Tags

How to Add Sale Prices & Strike-Throughs in Shopify — Display On-Sale Badges Easily

Running sales the right way on Shopify is one of the most effective ways to build urgency, boost clicks, and increase conversions. In this guide, we’ll look at how to add sale prices, strike-throughs, and automatic sale tags to your products in Shopify — step by step.

Inside your Shopify admin, go to Products → Select a product → Variants → Edit. Under the Pricing section, you’ll see two important fields: Price and Compare-at Price. The Price field is your active sale price — the amount customers pay. The Compare-at Price is your regular price, which appears crossed out to show the discount. If your compare-at price is higher than the regular price, Shopify automatically displays a sale badge and strike-through.

Example: if your product normally sells for $80, but you want to run a limited weekend sale for $49.99, set Price = $49.99 and Compare-at Price = $80. After saving, your product page will now show the original price crossed out with a clear sale badge.

If you need to update multiple products at once, select all items from your product list and click Bulk Edit. Then add the Compare-at Price column. This lets you apply sale pricing in bulk — perfect for Black Friday, seasonal deals, or clearance campaigns. Once you’ve adjusted your prices, click Save to apply the sale instantly across your store.

When your sale ends, remove or lower your compare-at prices so the badge disappears. Consistency matters — your sales should start and stop clearly to maintain transparency and trust. Don’t leave “sales” up forever, as this can reduce urgency and credibility.

Real urgency and limited-time offers drive genuine customer action. If you’re running a weekend sale, clearly announce the start and end times on your homepage banner. After it ends, restore normal pricing — this helps customers recognize your brand as trustworthy.
