Shopify Horizon Is Here! AI Themes, Drag & Drop Editor & Huge 2025 Updates
Shopify Summer Editions 2025: Horizon and the Future of AI Theme Design
Shopify’s latest release, Summer Editions 2025: Horizon, takes a bold leap toward a smarter, more creative store-building experience. If you’ve ever struggled with customizing your Shopify theme or felt limited by static layouts, this new update is going to change everything. Horizon introduces a new design foundation powered by AI, drag-and-drop functionality, and 10 brand-new free Shopify themes.
The Horizon Foundation is Shopify’s new design system that completely reimagines how merchants build stores. You can now easily nest blocks within existing sections to create custom layouts. With Shopify Magic and AI block generation, you can type a short prompt like “floating product cards with a 3D tilt” or “before-and-after image slider,” and Shopify instantly builds the section for you.
For merchants who’ve long wanted true drag-and-drop design, this is the update we’ve been waiting for. Shopify’s new block picker lets you preview each block before adding it, so you can visually build your store instead of guessing how something might look. Whether you’re building a product page or a homepage, the process is now faster, simpler, and far more visual.
Another huge addition to Summer Editions 2025 is the introduction of 10 brand-new free themes. Each theme, designed either by Shopify or powered by AI, works natively with Horizon’s flexible structure. Themes like Fabric, Ritual, and Pitch showcase the range of what’s possible — from clean editorial layouts to high-contrast modern storefronts. Just remember, your images and products will make the biggest difference, so always visualize how your content will fit the design.
These themes are included with your Shopify plan, meaning they’re completely free to use. This marks the first major theme release in years and finally gives merchants real variety when launching a new store. As always, you can explore these directly at ProfessorCommerce.com for tutorials on setup and optimization.
Horizon also simplifies the coding experience. You can still edit the code if you like, but most merchants won’t need to. AI handles the complex stuff — from styling elements to generating interactive sections — without breaking your theme. Still, some questions remain around support: if AI-generated code causes issues, will Shopify support step in? We’ll know more as Horizon rolls out.
Shopify also hinted at a new capability to generate entire themes from a single prompt. This could completely disrupt the theme ecosystem by allowing merchants to describe their business, and Shopify AI builds a store instantly. Whether these will require theme licenses or support is yet to be confirmed, but it’s a fascinating step toward “AI-first” commerce design.
