Shopify Horizon Drive — The Hidden Game Inside Summer Editions
Shopify Horizon Drive — The Hidden Game Inside Summer Editions
If you’ve ever needed a quick break from managing your Shopify store, this one’s for you. Shopify quietly added a fun, interactive game called Horizon Drive to the bottom of its Summer Editions 2023 page — and it’s surprisingly good.
In case you missed it, Shopify Summer Editions is the company’s massive semi-annual update series that showcases over 100 new tools, features, and design upgrades for merchants. Buried among the serious updates, you’ll find a fully playable browser racing game built right into the site. It’s called Horizon Drive, and it’s part of Shopify’s new Horizon design system — the same visual framework that powers the modern Shopify admin and online store editor.
The game itself isn’t designed to teach you about eCommerce or boost conversions, but it does showcase how far Shopify’s front-end development tools have come. Smooth animations, liquid mercury effects, and colorful UI themes all connect to the larger Horizon visual identity Shopify is rolling out across its platform.
If you’re a developer or designer, it’s also an impressive example of what’s possible with WebGL and Shopify’s internal design tools. And if you’re just a store owner who’s overworked and needs a break, it’s honestly just fun to play for a few minutes — a little reminder that Shopify doesn’t always take itself too seriously.
To play it yourself, visit the Shopify Summer Editions page and scroll all the way to the bottom. You’ll find the Horizon Drive section — click to start your engine and race through a track full of Shopify Easter eggs, including the Shopify mascot hidden on the sidelines.
It’s nice to see Shopify experimenting with interactive web content, showing off its creativity and design chops. These small touches make the platform more human and memorable — something that can inspire merchants and developers alike.
