If you’re managing a Shopify store and customers tell you that your product shows “Sold Out” even though you know you have stock — don’t panic. This is one of the most common Shopify inventory issues, and it’s surprisingly easy to fix.
When your Add to Cart button becomes unclickable or your product page displays “Sold Out,” the first thing to check is your inventory tracking and location settings. In most cases, Shopify is reading zero stock at a specific fulfillment location — even if you have quantities listed elsewhere. Each fulfillment center, location, or app connected to your store tracks its own on-hand amount, and Shopify bases availability on those numbers.
Head to your product in the Shopify admin, open the Inventory section, and look under Track quantity. You’ll likely see multiple rows for each location. If the quantities show zero, add the correct number available at that location, then hit Save. Refresh your store and test the product again — the “Sold Out” text should disappear and the Add to Cart button should work normally.
If you prefer to continue accepting orders even when inventory is temporarily zero, toggle the option “Continue selling when out of stock.” This lets customers keep buying while you restock, which can be helpful if you’re working with fulfillment partners or made-to-order products. Keep in mind that this doesn’t affect your Shopify POS — it only applies to your online storefront.
You can also add a fun touch to your storefront by customizing the “Sold Out” button text. Go to Online Store → Themes → Edit default theme content and search for “sold out.” Replace it with text that fits your brand — for example, “Coming Soon,” “Back Next Week,” or “Pre-Order Now.” This small tweak can turn an otherwise disappointing message into a positive customer experience.
