How to Create an Under Construction Page in Shopify (Password Protection Tutorial)
How to Create a Shopify “Under Construction” or “Coming Soon” Page (Password Protection Tutorial)
If your Shopify store isn’t quite ready for customers or you’re planning a big relaunch, setting up a password-protected “coming soon” page can help protect your brand while keeping visitors engaged. In this guide, we’ll go over how to enable password protection, customize your message, and even collect emails during downtime.
From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Preferences. Scroll down to the section labeled Password Protection. Here, you can enable the password page, create a custom message for visitors, and enter a password that allows staff or select customers early access.
Once the password page is enabled, head over to Online Store → Themes → Customize. At the top of the editor, select Other → Password Page. This brings up your default “coming soon” page, where you can fully customize your heading, colors, fonts, and even add a branded background image. Write something simple like “Coming Soon – Sign Up for Early Access!” to keep your visitors interested.
Shopify’s password page is more than a placeholder — it’s a chance to collect emails before launch. Add your sign-up form so visitors can join your early access list. You can even offer an incentive like a discount code once your store goes live.
As you customize, think about brand consistency. Add your logo, adjust your color scheme, and include your social links. You can experiment with opacity or background blur to make your message pop. Many merchants use this as a “soft launch” strategy: advertise your store on social media, collect signups, and later send the password to early customers for a private preview sale.
Note that while password protection is enabled, your pages won’t appear in search results. Only your password page will be visible until you disable protection again. When you’re ready for launch, just uncheck the box in Preferences and your full store will go live instantly.
